Our History

Barlow Tyrie, an esteemed manufacturer of outdoor furniture, was established in 1920, and it has since then built a reputation for producing exceptional quality furniture. The company's journey began in East London, where it started as a specialist manufacturer of teak wood outdoor furniture. Over the years, it has grown from a small horse stable to a renowned global brand, becoming the oldest remaining manufacturer of traditional English teak outdoor furniture.

The story of Barlow Tyrie started with Victor Tyrie, who served as a drummer boy in the Royal Marines in 1912. Following his service in the First World War, Victor and his colleague Frederick Barlow were employed by The Castles Shipbreaking Company, making outdoor furniture from teak sourced from the breaking of old timber ships. The foundation of the teak outdoor furniture industry was laid in those early days, and the company has since then prospered based on a reputation for quality and value.

In 1920, Victor and Frederick, together with a few others, started their own business in London, initially in Walthamstow and later moving to a small horse stable in Leytonstone. The company's first outdoor furniture was made almost entirely by hand, with a single saw-bench being the only machine used in production. It took the most efficient worker at least a full day to make one teak seat, and the business prospered based on its reputation for quality and value.

During the Second World War, the company ceased making outdoor furniture and instead worked on the repair of London bomb damage and the installation of blackout in public buildings. Following the war, when the supply of timber became available again, the company resumed production, producing rustic outdoor furniture using home-grown timber.

Barlow Tyrie has had a long tradition of producing outdoor furniture using only the best materials, and it has always used teak for its traditional products. The company produces furniture for many exclusive London stores, including Harrods, Maples, Heals and the Army & Navy Stores, together with many other outlets across the country.

Barlow Tyrie has since expanded its reach to the European market and opened an office and warehouse in the USA to serve its increasingly important market in North America. In 1992, the company opened a factory on the island of Java in response to a decision by the Indonesian government to stop the export of Teak. The factory was later redeveloped and expanded to approximately 300,000 sq.ft. in area.
