A Bit About the Process

Stone craft and stonemasonry have existed as a craft since the dawn of civilisation when man could use and make tools. It is therefore not entirely unsurprising that it features not only across a variety of cultures but features heavily in some of the longest standing historic buildings of all time, from Stonehenge to the Taj Mahal.

Stones are mined by quarrymen who split veins, or sheets of rock, then extract the resulting blocks of stone from the ground. Our sawyers then cut these rough blocks into cubes by using specialised high powered diamond tipped saws. Stones can be subsequently carved into complex geometric shapes depending on the design requirement of a particular project.

History of Bath Stone

Bath Stone is a type of limestone that has been quarried in the vicinity of Bath, England since Roman times. It is a warm honey-coloured stone, a type of oolitic limestone, which is composed of the mineral calcite. It is particularly suitable for masonry and architectural work due to its softness and ability to be easily carved, making it an ideal choice for intricate details and complex designs.

Over the centuries, Bath Stone has been used in the construction of many iconic buildings in Bath, including the Royal Crescent, the Circus, and the Assembly Rooms, earning the city its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
