Blair Gratton Architects is an RIBA Chartered Architect Practice operating from the centre of Derby's Cathedral Quarter. Our Director, Simon Gratton, is an RIBA Conservation accredited Architect. We serve Derby city and its suburbs, together with the whole of Derbyshire, extending into the surrounding counties of Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, and Leicestershire.
Throughout our 70-year lineage, dating back to 1952 when the practice was established in Derby as William Blair & Partners, we have acquired a wide-ranging portfolio of project experience. From domestic and heritage, to ecclesiastical, education, commercial, healthcare, and community architecture. With an established team of experienced individuals, we are fully qualified to take you through all stages of your project.

Our Portfolio of Work
We have an extensive portfolio of projects in Derbyshire, where we were appointed as Architects. Our projects include the conservation of a war memorial, a swimming pool centred extension, a new primary school in Weston-on-Trent, landscaping in Derbyshire, traditional house extensions, essential alterations to a GP surgery, extensions to established churches, contemporary open-plan extensions, new choir stalls to St. Matthew's Church, the conversion of a heritage barn to a dwelling, a new ancillary dwelling alongside a historic 'ropery', and a new sustainability-focused home in the Greenbelt.

We are a Chartered Practice Architect Practice based in Derby. We abide by the Codes of Professional Conduct set by both the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). We have established relationships with other agencies, professionals, and local authorities which we can draw upon, as required, to assist in the successful realization of your project.
We offer the full package to make your concept a reality; not just the services of an architectural designer or technician (or 'plan drawer'), as Architects, we provide a professional, regulated design consultancy service. We work with our clients to take their projects to tender and administer Building Contracts and work on-site managing payment and programmes.
The Blair Gratton Architects Team
Our Director, Simon Gratton, is a registered Architect with the ARB, a chartered Architect member of the RIBA, and a Conservation Architect registered with the RIBA. Simon took over the day-to-day running of the practice from his father John and partner John Blair in 2000. John Gratton is a registered Architect with the ARB and an Architect member of the RIBA. In December 2023, John had been a member of the Royal Institute for 50 years, a rare achievement, and has a huge amount of experience working in the Profession. Ray Harlow is our senior Technician, who has been with the practice since 1970. As our longest-running member of the team, Ray has garnered a wealth of experience in all sectors of technical design.
