Helping old buildings for modern living

As an architect, I am driven by a deep passion for historic structures and a commitment to helping their owners seamlessly integrate these buildings into modern life. I understand the unique challenges faced by small congregations in preserving their beloved church buildings while fulfilling their mission. Being part of these projects is deeply fulfilling, and I revel in the opportunity to contribute to their longevity and relevance.

Beyond my work with older buildings, I am actively engaged in exploring sustainable building practices. One of my current projects involves the design and construction of a private chapel constructed entirely from straw bales, featuring a distinctive reciprocal-frame roof. This venture allows me to combine my architectural expertise with my dedication to environmentally friendly design methods. Furthermore, I have several projects and potential projects in London, focusing on helping homeowners create functional and stylish small-scale extensions within their budget constraints.

Embarking on this entrepreneurial journey at a time when many consider retirement is a truly exciting new chapter. My career path has been nothing short of diverse and enriching. I collaborated with my late husband in our architectural partnership, Robert and Anne Netherwood. We had a transformative experience setting up and running the Home Advisory Service in Dodoma, Tanzania, for eight years. Upon our return to the UK, I was instrumental in reestablishing our architectural practice.

In 1991, I took a different turn and was ordained, dedicating 16 years to serving three small, rural parishes in North Shropshire. My commitment to these communities remained unwavering until my husband's cancer diagnosis necessitated a shift in priorities. During this challenging time, I partnered with Kevin Slack and my husband to establish Greenspace Architects Ltd.

I continued to freelance for Greenspace until 2015, and today, I run my own chartered architectural practice from the comfort of my home. I've been incredibly fortunate to have Andy Hales as a freelance assistant for three years until April 2019. Andy recently completed his RIBA Part 2 studies at the College of Alternative Technology in Machynlleth and has become a valuable resource in my practice.
