The Story of Roger Platts

Our founder, Roger Platts, has been passionate about horticulture since a tender age of 13. This early passion blossomed into formal training, followed by valuable experience working in numerous nurseries both in the UK and abroad. During this time, Roger fostered a keen interest in garden design and the art of successful plant combinations, ultimately leading him to establish his own garden design business in 1989.

Roger's early success at the renowned Chelsea Flower Show with his sundries exhibits paved the way for a full garden exhibit in 1995, securing a prestigious Silver-Gilt medal. His talent and dedication continued to shine at both Chelsea and Hampton Court, culminating in an impressive collection of accolades, including eight Gold Medals, three Silver-Gilt Medals, the coveted 'Best in Show 2002' and the 'People's Choice Award' for the M&G Garden in 2010. Most recently, Roger's M&G garden, celebrating the Chelsea Centenary, received another coveted Gold medal.

The Nursery and Wider Landscape

Since September 1996, Roger Platts has nurtured a flourishing seven-acre nursery in Edenbridge, nestled in the picturesque Kent countryside. Open to the public Monday to Friday, the nursery houses a diverse collection of plants alongside our design office. Here, visitors can also explore the adjoining three-acre wildflower meadow and bluebell woodland, a testament to Roger's dedication to natural beauty.

Further enhancing public engagement, Roger's private garden 'Leydens', updated continuously since 2016, opens its gates each summer as part of the beloved NGS events.

His dedication extends beyond his own pursuits, actively participating as a member of the Gardens Judging Panel for RHS shows and contributing his expertise to numerous RHS committees. Roger Platts remains a highly respected and sought-after plantsman in the UK, continuing to inspire and influence the world of gardening.

Awards and Recognition

From its inception, Roger Platts Garden Design has consistently impressed at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Roger 's first Chelsea show garden achieved a coveted Gold medal, setting the stage for a long line of accomplishments. To date, he has achieved an impressive eight RHS Gold medals, recognised as a testament to his unwavering dedication to delivering exceptional design and horticultural excellence.

The pinnacle of this success was undoubtedly the "People's Choice" award bestowed upon the M&G garden in 2010, and the prestigious "Best Show Garden" award in 2002, a recognition of his ability to create truly breathtaking and inspiring horticultural masterpieces.
