Ash Dieback

Ash dieback is a fungal disease that is predicted to kill 95% of all Ash trees in the UK. The fungus, called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, originated in Asia and does not cause much damage to the native hosts of the Manchurian ash and Chinese ash. However, its introduction to Europe has devastated the European ash.

What is Ash Dieback?

Ash dieback is caused by the fungus spreading through the tree through natural openings or wounds, allowing it to infect the leaves and stems of the tree. The fungus can also spread through contact with contaminated soil and plant material.

Symptoms of Ash Dieback

The symptoms of ash dieback include:

• Leaves developing dark patches in the summer
• Leaves wilting and discolouring to black
• Dieback of the shoots and leaves
• Lesions developing where branches meet the trunk
• New growth from previously dormant buds further down the trunk

What Happens to the Tree?

The fungus overwinters in leaf litter on the ground and produces small white fruiting bodies between July and October, which release spores to infect other trees.
