Our journey began in the early 1980s when two friends, Chris Potter and Nick Crabbie, sought to diversify their professional interests and identified a distinct lack of garden retail facilities in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Chris, a former television journalist and keen gardener, managed our initial nursery operations at the walled garden of Ford Castle in rural Northumberland. Meanwhile, Nick, a seasoned farmer, secured a three-acre site in Berwick-upon-Tweed to establish our flagship retail location. We opened our first small glasshouse and plant display beds to the public in March 1983, strategically positioned near a newly constructed trunk road roundabout. From those humble beginnings, we quickly recognised that the local demand for both plants and horticultural sundries far outstripped our initial supply capabilities.
