MJK was founded by Marcin Kawalek, a highly experienced construction engineer and master joiner, with the aim of providing a top-quality interior renovation service to Edinburgh customers who demand quality and value attention to detail and a creative approach to problem solving. Marcin's background includes studying construction engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the Szczecin University of Technology, followed by an apprenticeship at an architectural design studio. He further developed his practical skills and knowledge of traditional craft techniques working for the Polish Ateliers for Conservation of Cultural Property. This experience working with historic architectural fabric was invaluable when Marcin arrived in Edinburgh, leading to work on renovating A-listed and UNESCO World Heritage listed buildings in Edinburgh. Over ten years, this has resulted in the development of a unique set of practical skills with solid theoretical foundations, including knowledge of and experience in working with materials used in historic buildings, as well as ways to sensitively and effectively combine them with modern materials and technologies. With years of experience in five different countries, Marcin's approach to construction and renovation work is influenced by his broad understanding of the building trade, ensuring that every project is undertaken with meticulous care and attention to detail.
